Trying to build a shiny new website

I sort of feel that before I send people to look at my website I should have a website worth looking at, or at least one that doesn't look like it was made ten years ago... but then it's tricky: what do I want to put on it? How much do I want to conform? Why has the editor stopped working when I click on something??? Ah well, the fact that you're reading this suggests it worked in the end.
